Radio Proglas

Radio Proglas is a non-profit Christian radio station operating in the Czech Republic with its seat in Brno. It is a member of APSV and a member of the colloquium of European Christian Radio stations CERC by the European Council. The name Proglas reminds us of the oldest old-Slavonic literal heritage. An antiphon called "Proglas" was composed by St Constantine-Cyril as a prologue of his own translation of four gospels into the old-Slavonic language that he together with his brother Methodius brought to Moravia in 863.
After the revolution in 1989, a group of young Catholics in Brno created Nadace Proglas ("Proglas Foundation") aiming to establish the first Christian radio station in the Czech Republic. They received the transmission license only in the spring of 1995. The first broadcast took place on 8th December 1995 from the Moravian shrine Svatý Hostýn. Thanks to financial contributions, the first office was opened in Brno and shortly after in almost all other diocesan towns in the Czech Republic: Olomouc, Prague, Hradec Králové, and Litoměřice.
In the beginning, the broadcasting was only 18 hours a day and it was administrated by eight people. Today, Radio Proglas transmits 24 hours a day and has more than 40 employees and 400 external collaborators. Radio Proglas operates through 15 transmitters on the FM frequency, which cover officially one third of the country (un-officially one half). The transmission is also terrestrial, satellite, through cable or internet.
The owner of the Radio Proglas is Father Martin Holík, who is also a member of the Council for Media by the Czech Bishops' Conference.
Radio Proglas is unique in the Czech Republic because it broadcasts without commercials. Its only source of income is the financial contributions by its listeners. The audience is mainly Catholic. It is presented as radio for the whole family, seeking to stress Christian values.
Radio Proglas' other activities:
- Nadační fond Radia Proglas ("Radio Proglas Foundation") helps to find financial support from the sponsors and benefactors.
- Klub přátel Radia Proglas ("Club of the friends of Radio Proglas") is a circle of audience members (some 43,000 people) who help financially to run the radio or the transmission.
- Vlnění ("Waving"), an annual magazine including information from the radio for the club members.
- Zpravodaj Radia Proglas ("Journal of Radio Proglas"), a trimester that informs about the happenings in the Radio Proglas.
